darkness

Most of us are very blessed to be sighted. Colour is perhaps the first thing of beauty we experience as a child. Notice how children’s books and toys are full of bright vivid colours that delight us. They catch the child’s eye and he is drawn to them instantly.

Now imagine a visually challenged child. What a challenge it would be to teach him colours.Talk about something he is probably never going to experience. This challenge has been met by Menena Cottin and Rosana Faria in their book titled “The Black Book of Colour”. Black line drawings that are raised on black paper are used which can be experienced by touch. A beautifully written text compliments the artwork describing colours through imagery. A sighted reader can begin to imagine what it is like to use Braille to read by running their finger over the raised drawings. A full Braille alphabet at the end of the book can be used interpret further.
