art and soul
Van Gogh's
sunflower paintings are truly a classic example of art inspiring more art. Van
Gogh began painting sunflowers after he left Holland and moved to France.
Majority of his sunflowers have been painted in the region of Arles, France
during 1888-1889. The first paintings of sunflowers were a series painted for
his friend, artist Paul Gauguin , when he visited Van Gogh. It is
interesting how the series captures the initial bright yellows of the full
bloom and gradually moves on to arid browns of
wilting. It takes one from life and vibrancy to death and disdain. The way he
has captured the gradual transformation in the flowers displays his connect to
the flower and how he has tried to unravel its different phases with such
evolved sensitivity and compassion.
